Today's success tip comes from Tim Goodwin.

After receiving an audience with the Dalai Lama, Tim Goodwin was inspired to work for the betterment of Australian children. He is a member of the National Indigenous Youth Movement of Australia.

What do you see as the biggest problem facing young people today, and what can we do about it?

The biggest problem facing young people today is apathy, which means a lack of concern about matters of great importance. I don't blame young people for their own apathy, the world has provided us with a situation where the youth voice is increasingly belittled, and where our maturity is constantly questioned. We need to fight against the temptation to not care about the world around us. Why? Because we will live with the mistakes created by governments today and we will bear the burden of solving the problems created by the generations before us. We have a right to be involved in the decisions that are being made on our behalf.

How can we be effective?

Number one: remember the power of the vote. Young people may not have it now, but they soon will, and youth is the fastest growing electorate in the country. So remind your politicians of what you care about and what issues you will cast your vote on through your schools, through protests and through your opinions.

Number two: we need to stop ignoring each other. Young people have not only become apathetic towards politicians, they have become apathetic towards each other. Whether you disagree with someone or not, each of us has the right to voice our opinion. Young people need to mobilise themselves and remind others of our ability to have an opinion and to express it.

Number three: ignore all those that belittle you as not being either 'experienced' or 'mature' enough. I doubt that many of our politicians understand what it is to be young in the 21st century.

At the end of the day we represent hope; hope for anything that seems unjust or oppressive in our societies. Don't lose that hope because of a belief that you are too young to make a difference. We will walk together in the corridors of power soon, and to appropriately deal with that in the future we need to start planning now by treating each other with respect, by having a democratic voice and by believing in our power through unity.
